Impact Works with the Canadian Blood Services’ OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network to Deliver Highly Successful PR Campaign

Impact’s connection to the Canadian Blood Services’ OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network is quite personal. President Huw Williams was diagnosed with leukemia in 2008, and in 2009 was one of over 800 patients in Canada waiting for a bone marrow match. Through the help of OneMatch, a bone marrow match for Huw was found and he received the lifesaving bone marrow transplant. Just over a year after the procedure, Huw and the staff at Impact wanted to express their thanks to the organization by offering pro bono PR services to bring greater awareness to the need for individuals to sign up as blood and bone marrow donors at www.onematch.ca.

The Canadian Blood Services is a national, not-for-profit charitable organization that manages the supply of blood and blood products in all provinces and territories, outside of Quebec. Canadian Blood Services also oversees the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network and provides national leadership for organ and tissue donation and transplantation. Canadian Blood Services operates 43 permanent collection sites and more than 20,000 donor clinics annually.

Impact and OneMatch collaborated on an extensive PR campaign in April 2011 to bring attention to the organization and the immense need for individuals to register as stem cell and bone marrow donors at www.onematch.ca. The campaign featured Huw Williams meeting his stem cell donor, 23-year-old Mike Hogman from Nanaimo, B.C., for the first time and having the chance to thank him for his lifesaving transplant.

The media coverage garnered from this PR effort was substantial and impressive, with over 100 stories being presented in print media, on the radio and on television. What is most important is that a huge number of Canadians who viewed the messaging regarding stem cell and bone marrow donation were made more aware on how simple it is to get involved and potentially save someone’s life in the process.

The Amethyst Women’s Addiction Centre

The Amethyst Women’s Addiction Centre was suffering from low attendance in its programs. Counsellors attributed this to a lack of knowledge of where the Centre was located, and the exact services which existed. A large-scale PR media effort was implemented by Impact Public Affairs in order to educate Ottawa’s citizens on the importance of women’s issues and addiction services in the city. The initiative focused on all media channels and also included an enhanced social media push to highlight all media appearances for Amethyst’s stakeholders.

A well established relationship with all of Ottawa’s major television networks enabled Amethyst’s messaging to be heard on a massive scale. This in addition to the print-media and radio push resulted in a huge increase in community awareness of the services Amethyst offers the Ottawa community. Due to this concentrated media effort, Amethyst saw a jump in women calling the Centre asking about program information, and a waiting list actually developed due to the increase in volume of women looking to access counseling services.

Total earned media statistics for 2010 were over 3.4 MILLION hits.

Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA)

In September 2006, Impact Public Affairs was approached by the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA) to advise on government advocacy and public awareness for the dangers of noisy toys. CASLPA wanted to engage their national body of members to alert parents and caregivers to the potential dangers of noisy toys to their child’s hearing in anticipation of the upcoming holiday shopping season.

CASLPA also wanted regulatory change: the noise emissions standards allowed toys that could permanently harm a child’s hearing. With Impact’s help, CASLPA underwent an extensive PR and government relations campaign to bring the issue of the dangers associated with noisy toys to both the public and government decision makers.

Impact developed the following strategy for CASLPA which served to raise the profile of the Association and its concerns:

Engage MPs with direct advocacy meetings coordinated by Impact.

Engage politicians and political media. Two national press conferences were held at the National Press Gallery in Ottawa to obtain maximum impact and media exposure in October of 2006 and 2007 respectively, just when parents are beginning to think about toys for the upcoming gift-giving season.

Demonstrated media and public support to politicians and senior Health Canada officials by repackaging media results for one on one lobbying.

Results

The resulting media coverage was the most comprehensive in CASLPA’s history. TV and radio news stations reported the event throughout the day and the message was featured on many networks’ 6 and 11 o’clock news. Major news stations, newspapers and all major media outlets were also interested by the message. CASLPA representatives were booked solid for interviews for days following the press conference.

Close to 5 million Canadians (over 14% of the population) saw the message in 2006 and the reach of the 2007 message was close to 8 million Canadians (over 27% of the population).

Government Action

Then MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis invited CASLPA to attend a national press conference on Parliament Hill where she announced the tabling of her Private Member’s Bill in support of CASLPA’s initiatives. More recently, Health Canada introduced regulations regarding noise emissions for children’s toys, lowering the acceptable level of emissions as per CASLPA’s request. This shows the impact of successful PR tactics coupled with effective government advocacy!

Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)

Five years ago, the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) hired Impact to raise the profile of their profession with a goal of seeking specific federal support for the recognition of foreign credentials. The challenge was that the society representing the third largest health profession in the country was almost unknown at the federal level and had never achieved advocacy results federally.

The strategy designed and implemented by Impact was to engage MPs and Ministers in their home ridings by organizing an ongoing series of laboratory tours. In addition, a national advocacy day was created and media messages regarding the importance of labs were produced.

Results

Budget 2009 provided $50 million over the next two years for a national foreign credential recognition framework. Then on November 30th, 2009, the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, endorsed a new framework in order to enhance and speed up foreign qualification recognition for internationally trained workers. Medical Laboratory Technologists were recognized by the Ministers as one of the first eight occupations in which the framework will initially be implemented. These were major wins for the Society.

In 2012, Impact was chosen to represent the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) and to organize the tenth annual Champions of Mental Health Awards and Faces of Mental Illness Awards. Traditionally both of these events have been held during Mental Illness Awareness Week in October.

In late February, it was decided to split the two events and to hold Champions in May, during Mental Health Week and in advance of the release of the Mental Health Commission’s Strategy on Mental Health. On little more than two months’ notice, we delivered an event that exceeded the client’s expectations and set new records in the following categories:

Total number of Champions nominated for awards nationwide;

Social media impressions (several million) during the public call for nominees in the month of March;

Total attendance at the event in May;

Total Parliamentarian attendance at the May event;

Media impressions for the event, and;

Pre-event website traffic

Impact President Huw Williams is the author of Government Relations for Canadian Associations: How to Be the Voice of Your Members with Government, published in 2010 by the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE). This new edition of CSAE’s popular monograph Guide to Government Relations for Directors of Not-for-Profit Organizations has been substantially updated and expanded for today’s complex lobbying landscape in Canada.

The predominant viewpoint of this book is that a proactive and well thought-out government relations strategy best serves the needs of association members. It is a tactical guide for achieving association lobby goals—at all levels of Canadian government relations.

The book has received a positive response from The Hill Times, the go-to publication for government and public affairs information. Impact worked with the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists (CASLPA) to create awareness of the dangers of noisy toys.
A unique concept fundraiser, with more appeal than traditional golf tournaments, the Amethyst Track Challenge involved corporate teams of 5 people competing against each other during a day long event held at Ottawa’s Terry Fox Athletic Facility. Participants competed in various track events and healthy food, massage tables and entertainment were provided throughout the day. Impact closed down their offices for the day in order to facilitate the event.

Over $100,000 have been raised for the charity through this event since 2008!

Award Recognition

The Amethyst Track Challenge has received several different accolades for its original fundraising concept. It was named a finalist this past November for the PR News Nonprofit PR Awards. Amethyst’s fundraising event was featured alongside notable international organizations including UNICEF and the United Nations Foundation. The award accepts entries from around the world, and is considered one of the highest honours bestowed on non-profit organizations. For more information on this incredible achievement click here.

Impact coordinated a unique race down Ottawa’s busy Sparks Street, involving former Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien, Beijing Olympic hopefuls and local CEOs to publicize the first year of the Amethyst Track Challenge. This event not only raised awareness and generated buzz for the Amethyst Track Challenge, but also was named the winner of PR News’ Nonprofit PR Award for "PR on a Shoestring" in 2008. No other Ottawa based organization has organized or hosted more successful advocacy building sessions than Impact!

Impact President Huw Williams co-emcees with Minister of Natural Resources Lisa Raitt at the Toronto International Auto Show in February 2009.

Impact has planned an impressive array of association events that combined the participation of senior federal Ministers, such as the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Industry, and the Minister of Finance, with member based themed meetings. Not only do we bring the right players to the table, but our President has a national reputation as a leading facilitator and advocacy planner.

Impact Public Affairs has received the 2010 Griner Award in recognition of superior business excellence. The Griner Award recognizes the significant contribution business members make to the association management field. The recipient, through their actions over an extended period of time, has contributed in a manner beyond the expectations of daily business.

The Griner Award is the top business recognition award from the Canadian Society of Association Executives (CSAE). In order to receive the award an organization must be nominated and recognized for business excellence by a minimum of three associations. Given the prestigious nature of the award, it is not presented every year. This year’s award marks the first time a public affairs firm has been recognized by the CSAE.

The Canadian Society of Association Executives’ (CSAE) esteemed annual awards honour positive and creative campaigns or coalitions. This year, the Concerned About Classrooms Campaign won the award for Best Public Information and Education campaign.

The Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA) has been concerned about the impact of poor classroom acoustics on children’s learning and teachers’ vocal health for some time. To raise awareness of this important issue, Impact brought together interested organizations at the federal and provincial level to form the Concerned About Classrooms Coalition, which led the award winning campaign.

Impact raised the campaign’s profile with announcements from Parliament Hill as well as a strategy of Canada-wide public education and grassroots advocacy.

Impact Public Affairs is pleased to announce that three recent campaigns have been recognized among thousands of top PR professionals and executives in the non-profit sector at the PR News Non-Profit Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, December 4th, 2008.

Now in its 61st year, PR News is the most trusted, executive level, reader-supported publication that helps enhance the business impact of PR. Other organizations recognized at this event included the American Heart Association, HGTV, American Cancer Society, and the United Way of America.

Impact’s campaigns stood out among huge organizations with multi-million dollar campaigns. Taking home the win in the PR on a Shoestring category, Impact Public Affairs’ campaign for local charity, the Amethyst Women’s Addiction Centre, also provided a venue to draw attention to the client’s cause: addiction awareness. This creative PR event that took home the gold consisted of a 50-yard dash down busy Sparks Street in order to raise awareness for Amethyst and to publicize the upcoming Amethyst Track Challenge.

“We are very excited about what these awards mean to our clients,” explained Huw Williams, President of Impact Public Affairs. “We are proud that our creative ideas and hard work have been recognized among top PR professionals in the non-profit sector, and that the success of our clients has had the opportunity to be profiled on this prestigious scale.”

Also receiving an honourable mention in Washington were Impact’s campaigns for best Advocacy Campaign, prepared for the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) and top Press Release for the Canadian Library Association (CLA); a campaign entitled “Concerned about Copyright.”

The CSAE’s Make A Better Canada Awards celebrate the added value not-for-profit organizations bring to Canadian society. This year, the Public Affairs and Government Relations Award went to the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA). CADA President Rick Gauthier and Impact President Huw Williams were on hand at the CSAE 2005-2006 Leadership Awards in Edmonton to accept the award this fall.

As CSAE described, “This organization [CADA] embarked on a successful grassroots campaign to expand tax deductibility for tools used by over 30,000 senior Canadian technicians. CADA also launched its Laureate Dealer Recognition Program designed to raise standards of ethical and professional conduct among Canada’s auto dealers. A key program component, the National Dealer Code of Ethics, established benchmarks for the conduct of future award winners. ”

Over the past decade, Impact Public Affairs has been in charge of developing and implementing every facet of CADA’s government relations strategy.
